New studies show how mood, motivation, and meaning, have biological levers that can be easily influenced by you. With your own prescribed dose of lifestyle changes, you can shift your baseline levels of brain chemistry and wire better synaptic connections. This discovery is not only practical, but transformative.
The Greek philosopher, Epictetus, taught that the only thing truly yours, is your response to the world. Neuroscience has carved a path from this idea straight to your think box. You actually have more control over regulating your biological headquarters than previously suspected.
These advances in adaptive neuroplasticity have overturned a century of assumptions that the brain is fixed. Ever changing in response to behavior, thought and experience, your chemical messengers can be adjusted to suit. And, it’s free.
Levers of the Big Four
Your brain runs on a relatively small set of neurotransmitters that shape almost every subjective experience. They are dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, and endorphins. Understanding which levers do what gives you agency over your chemical inventory.
Dopamine governs motivation, anticipation, and drive.

Serotonin balances mood, contentment, and social belonging.
- Meet more serotonin with lots of sunlight (morning especially), exercise, and meditate. Practice gratitude, eat tryptophan-rich foods like poultry and fish, maintain gut health.
- Isolation depletes serotonin as does rumination, poor diet, and light deprivation.
Norepinephrine activates alertness, focus, and arousal.
- Stimulating norepinephrine involves an engagement of eustress. These are challenging, achievable activities that fall under the category of “healthy stress.” Cold water dips or showers like serotonin increases norepinephrine as well as exercise.
- Norepinephrine drains with chronic overwhelm, burnout, or being stuck in a sedentary lifestyle.
Endorphins induce pleasure sensations, manufacture pain relief, and produce flow state immersion.
- Laughter is an easy way to increase your endorphins. Sustained aerobic exercise (runner’s high) is another. Social bonding and listening to music will produce this feel-good neurotransmitter.
- Endorphin nonstarters are an inactive lifestyle, reactive behavior, and lack of social contact.

Oxytocin
Additionally, a chemical messenger not to be ignored is oxytocin. Functioning as a strong prescription for well being, it’s both a hormone and a neuromodulator. Produced in the hypothalamus and released into the bloodstream via the pituitary gland, this endocrinological marvel is carried through the blood dispensing trust, social bonding, and empathy. Commonly referred to as the “tend and befriend” hormone, a 20-second hug is sufficient to administer a measurable dose of oxytocin.
